The Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center

Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center is one of the world’s most prominent philanthropic organizations. It supports and promotes different projects in the world of arts and culture, education, health, sports, and social welfare. Its facilities include the 210.000-square-meter Stavros Niarchos Park as well as the new, cutting-edge facilities of the National Library of Greece and the National Opera. The Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center is a gift from the Stavros Niarchos Foundation to the Greek government.

What is Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center?

The Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Centre (SNFC) is a cultural institution in Athens, Greece. It was founded in 1987 by Stavros Niarchos, the founder of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation. The Centre’s aims are to promote the arts and humanities, to support the development of new talent, and to promote international collaborations. The Centre occupies a building on the banks of the Ilissos River, in the heart of the city.

The SNFC is home to the country’s largest collection of contemporary Greek art, including works by leading artists such as Yiannis Tsarouchis, Yiannis Moralis.

The architectonics of the SFNCC

Its characteristic large open areas are intended to bring people together, as is its one-of-a-kind library and an artificial large canal that resemble the ancient Phalerum port that once located there. Renzo Piano’s, is the architect of the Center, whose design includes lookout points from many high platforms, along with the ‘Lighthouse,’ also the floor to roof glass panels which encircle the building. As a result, the structure allows you to connect with the heart of Athens, which is surrounded by the deep blue sea.

Events at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center

Throughout the week, the SNFCC offers a variety of outdoor activities like cross training, football, pilates and yoga in addition with exciting tours of the Stavros Niarchos Park and the cultural center, both in English and in Greek. Also, a plethora of thematic events are held for everyone every month. Unique performances at the Greek National Opera, art exhibitions from famous painters, poets and writers but also many cinema, dance and music festivals.

How to get there

The SNFCC can be reached by bus, metro, trolley, or tram. Also, it provides daily free shuttle bus service for visitors on the route Syntagma – Syggrou-Fix – SNFCC and vice versa. The shuttle bus’s terminal is at the intersection of Syntagma Square and Ermou. Book a ride and enjoy the center of Athens.
