This is the most common question students ask us. In our experience, this question is quite relevant. The factors that mainly determine the number of teaching hours corresponding to each level are the following: the primary motivation of the students, their main goal, whether they live permanently or not in Greece, the frequency of the lessons every week, and the total duration of a program, the direct contact with Greeks within their family, friendly or professional environment, the student’s personality, their knowledge of other foreign languages, age, additional understanding of ancient Greek, the ability of students to realize and define their way of learning, as well as the type of the course (private or group), face-to-face or online teaching and the amount of extra work and commitment besides the lessons. Whenever our students raise this question, we refer them to the Greek Language Centre, which is an official certification entity and states the following: for A1, 120-150 hours are needed; for A2: 180-210 hours; for B1: 230-300; for B2: 350-450; for C1: 520; and C2: over 600 hours. Their official website states this is an indicative number of hours. To conclude, to define the approximate number of hours needed per level, we should consider as many factors as possible from those mentioned above. Finally, each time we move to a higher level, we try to ensure that the students have mastered the previous level in terms of all basic skills: reading, listening, speaking, and grammar, and the corresponding vocabulary has been covered.

For several practical and cultural reasons, the Greek language remains a valuable asset in modern times. Greek is the language of ancient philosophers like Plato, Aristotle, and Socrates, whose works contributed to forming Western thought and consolidating ethics and politics. Masterpieces like Homer’s Iliad and Odyssey have influenced literature worldwide. Key terms in politics, philosophy, medicine, and science originate from Greek (e.g., democracy, ethics, physics), and learning Greek can provide deeper insights into understanding other languages, especially Romance languages. Modern Greek can facilitate accommodation in Greece and develop into a tourism, trade, and cultural exchange hub. Having the opportunity to create bonds with the locals, you will gain an in-depth understanding of the Greek way of living while feeling at home exploring Greece. As an official language of the EU, Greek is a valuable asset for those who want to work in official EU bodies or organizations, as well as in diplomatic positions or companies with financial activities within the EU. For those wishing to study ancient Greek writings or pursue a career in Classical Studies, Greek is an indispensable tool. Those working in medicine, biology, and chemistry, knowing Greek, will be familiar with much of the terminology since many words in these sciences are derived from Greek. Knowledge of and exposure to the grammar and morphology of the Greek language sharpens cognitive abilities, while the underlying mathematical way of thinking enhances problem-solving abilities. For those with Greek roots, learning Greek helps strengthen their ties with their family and keep their cultural heritage alive. Finally, like any foreign language, learning Greek broadens the learner’s horizons, stimulates the brain, fosters linguistic agility, encourages inclusivity, and enhances acceptance of diversity.

Learning Greek can be fulfilling, but how challenging it feels depends on your linguistic background, dedication, and learning goals. Greek might initially seem intimidating for English speakers due to its unique alphabet and complex grammar. It is easier for French, Spanish, Italian, and German speakers due to the common characteristics that the Greek language shares with the above languages in terms of the semantics, syntax, and morphology aspects.  The Greek alphabet, though different, is relatively easy to pick up, and once you’ve learned it, you can start reading and writing. On the other hand, Greek grammar involves declension, verb conjugations, and a detailed tense system, which can take some time to assimilate. However, its logical structure often makes it more approachable with regular practice.
